Gr 9 Up-Each volume discusses the causes, diagnosis, progression, and treatments for a single genetic condition. The authors delve into how doctors and scientists unraveled the causes of the conditions, stressing advances in the study of genes and DNA. Although treatments have improved quality and length of life in many cases, no cures for these diseases exist yet. Photos of famous and everyday people with the conditions put faces and names to the topic, but the authors do not minimize the stress and difficulties experienced by both patients and families. Diagrams help clarify complex concepts. An extensive list of resources leads to related organizations. VERDICT Whether seeking report material or personal information, readers will appreciate these thorough overviews. Libraries can add volumes as needed, but the entire series merits consideration.
