Grades 7-10 True to its series name, Movements and Moments That Changed America (8 titles), this volume concentrates on the suffragist movement and the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, giving women the right to vote. The comprehensive text opens with the lesser-known story of the Wyoming Territory and Esther Morris, a saloon owner who convinced lawmakers to make voting legal for women in the burgeoning territory. After establishing its significance towards nationwide suffrage, the narrative backtracks to the founding of the U.S. and the creation of rights for white men only. Throughout the book, the author highlights the intersection between women's and African American rights, and the roles Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth played in forwarding the cause. Sidebars spotlighting leaders in women's rights, large period photographs, and a lengthy chronology add more details to the thorough presentation.Women in Focus: The 19th in 2020(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
