Past Pandemics and COVID-19

Grades 7-12 This entry in the timely COVID-19 Pandemic series (5 titles) looks back at previous pandemics and their relationship to the current spread of the coronavirus. Opening "At a Glance" bullet points provide key summary facts for quick reference, while the introduction gives a brief overview of the World Health Organization declaring COVID-19 a global pandemic. Written in a high/low format with short, simple sentences, the straightforward text is divided into four chapters examining the Black Death, the 1918 flu pandemic, AIDS, and the H1N1 virus--their rise and spread, symptoms, and treatment. More interesting are explanations of their similarities and differences with COVID-19. For example, masks and physical distancing were used to help stop the spread of both the 1918 flu and COVID-19. Large photographs and boxed information offer more details and aid comprehension.
