This volume from the Global Connections series introduces the lives of Japanese teens. Though the focus may sound a bit narrow, it provides an appealing gateway into the society as a whole; Donovan even discusses such matters as why men traditionally work very long hours. Leading off with a chapter that emphasizes the intense pressure on students to gain admission to competitive schools and universities, the book also describes homes, foods, social groups, gender roles, holidays, work, and recreation in Japan. Sidebars introduce topics such as the Japanese tea ceremony and the implications of the low birth rate. Back matter includes a page of fast facts, a time line, a glossary, source notes, and bibliographies. The relatively small type may put off younger students, but exceptionally clear color photos offer appealing glimpses of young people and their surroundings. With a visual and conceptual edge on traditional country books, this is an attractive introduction to contemporary culture in Japan.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
