Gr 10 Up-The first title introduces the "eight limbs" of yoga. The physical practice is one of those limbs, and a large portion of this book is devoted to the poses. They are clearly photographed in progressive steps. Only English terms are used for the asanas; Sanskrit words are woven into the text when it delves into the philosophical, ethical, and psychological aspects of the discipline. Information is presented in historical context along with the value of yoga in everyday life, whether to understand or improve it. The book flows well, building interest in readers in developing a practice. The second title is similarly engaging. Pilates is more of an exercise regimen than a lifestyle, but the coverage of the principles explores the body and mind connection. Both books are well designed, clear, and graphically interesting; however, the models used the photos look older than teens. Indeed, these are not simple books. Stefanie Iris Weiss's Everything You Need to Know About Yoga: An Introduction for Teens (Rosen, 1999) has less depth and complexity. Mary Kaye Chryssicas's Breathe, Yoga for Teens (DK, 2007) will also appeal to younger teens with its "pop" look; its focus is limited to yoga as exercise. For older teens who are truly interested in learning about yoga or pilates, these books are excellent starting points.-Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL
