Laughter is the reward for listening to this compilation of many of the writings of Alan Bennett's career. Sometimes the Leeds accent is hard to decipher, and other times the British idiom is unfamiliar, but by reading his own work, Bennett treats us to a look at the era in which he wrote. He relates tales of his partners in comedy, Johnathan Miller, Peter Cook, and Dudley Moore. He speaks of his interest in architecture and theater, as well as dozens of other topics, all in his quiet, unemotional voice. When you realize how funny his last statement is (which you don't realize for several seconds), you know that you've not only had a good time but learned much from this pleasurable audiobook. J.P.
