For the past 44 years, Essence magazine has inspired and empowered African American women with its information on health, beauty, politics, and culture. Lewis (CEO, publisher, and cofounder, Essence), along with Edwards (Children of the Dream: The Psychology of Black Success), traces his journey as a black man coming of age during the tumultuous 1960s, as well as the history of the magazine as a business enterprise. Lewis engages the reader in his story, showing how through hard work and determination he overcame societal obstacles to get a scholarship to and graduate from the University of New Mexico, where he was one of 12 African American students. After attending school the author worked in banking but dreamed of owning a business that would benefit the black community. He eventually partnered with three other black businessmen to start the magazine. Sharing insights into what it takes to run a business and be a leader, Lewis further recounts the struggles leading up to Essence becoming a successful, award-winning publication. VERDICT For readers of memoir, aspiring entrepreneurs, and students of journalism and African American studies.--Donna Marie Smith, Palm Beach Cty. Lib. Syst., FL
