Nutrition counselor and founder of Foodtrainers™, a New York City–based nutrition practice, Slayton takes a light-hearted approach to dieting, though her method is thorough. According to Slayton, the average dieter makes four attempts at weight loss per year, but most diet plans fail because there is no action plan that addresses the inevitable obstacles. This streamlined text addresses a number of such scenarios, including dating, traveling (i.e. avoid the “carbinental breakfast”), holidays, and business lunches. Slayton cleverly delivers sound advice: for instance, she favors eating a bigger meal at lunchtime (she calls it “dunch,” a cross between lunch and dinner), steering clear of food in the evenings, and doing a “walkthrough” at the beginning of the day to plan meals and snacks. Her “Ten Steps to Svelte” will also help readers get off to a good start and end their day with a weight-reducing seven hours of sleep. Peppered with illustrations and pithy quotes, the book is both entertaining and practical. Readers will appreciate Slayton’s word-play as well as by her real-life solutions to such dilemmas as quick weight loss strategies for the beach or how to be “choosy when boozy.” A modest number of slimming recipes are included.
