What more can anyone say that isnt already in the title? Bakalar, author of the New York Times column Vital Signs and a load of books, has compiled a crisp, witty reference guide for the common person whose TV remote pausesbut doesnt lingeron any channel broadcasting documentary coverage of medical procedures. Its perhaps the ultimate short-attention-span encyclopedia of existing medical-scientific knowledge, practical enough (answers questions like, Is coffee good or bad for you? and What should be in a well-stocked emergency kit?) to be all but required reading and quirky enough (establishes whether you can be scared stiff, describes 10 psychiatric diseases you hope youve never heard of) to be eminently entertaining. Venturing no opinions or endorsements, Bakalar cautions that the book doesnt offer, nor is in any way a substitute for, expert medical judgment. Its well-referenced entries merely summarize current research. Whatever. Bakalars collection provides many moments of erudite amusement.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
