With Sayers (formerly, English, Gallaudet Univ.) as editor, Gallaudet University Press publishes the second edition of Deaf Characters in Literature. The first volume, Angels and Outcasts: An Anthology of Deaf Characters in Literature, edited by Trent Batson and Eugene Bergman, was published in 1976. Sayers draws primarily from the same historical pool of literature as did her predecessors (about a third of the material included here was published after 1976), and she includes mainstream, big-name authors (among the earlier selections, Flannery O'Connor and Nadine Gordimer; among the later pieces, Julian Barnes). Her goal is not to champion the cause of American Sign Language (which, she notes, was a goal of the previous volume) or to evaluate authorial support for deaf people. She simply collects and presents a body of material that features deaf characters--although she does include a long concluding essay, "Reading Deaf Characters," in which she explains how she interprets much of the included material. VERDICT While readers who know little about deafness may wish to begin with the editor's essay, anyone with an interest in the subject will be well served by this wide-ranging anthology.--Audrey Snowden Orrington P.L., ME
