Spanning the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) to the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, this title analyzes approximately 30 different battles, offering detailed accounts of each conflict from start to finish and an in-depth look at the many factors that led to war in the 20th century. Tucker (The Roots and Consequences of Civil Wars and Revolutions: Conflicts That Changed World History), a former professor and U.S. Army captain, explains that he tried to include conflicts from each continent. The summary at the beginning of each entry provides a broad examination of the economic, political, and social aspects that contributed to the unrest. In addition to Tucker's contributions, several other authors share their expertise. Each piece is followed by a relevant time line that will be particularly helpful for those less well versed in the subject. VERDICT Intricately written, this is best for college-aged students of military history. However, the summaries and time lines make this work accessible for savvy high school students or curious general readers.--Christine Sharbrough, Tewksbury P.L., MA

Although the 30 entries here do not represent every single conflict or military engagement during the twentieth century, this volume offers readers insight into conflicts that led to significant political and sociological change in the world. Each entry also discusses the historical background and future impact of these conflicts. The author provides both a chronological and an alphabetical listing of entries in addition to a thorough index. The well-organized entries range from the Russo-Japanese War to the Yugoslav Wars. Each entry contains an introduction to the subject, causes and ramifications of the conflict, statistics and use of primary sources, photographs, maps, time lines of events, and an impressive list of further reading. Entries were written by 15 contributors, including experts in the field of military history. This comprehensive volume has much to offer both academic and public libraries looking for a reference work about warfare in the twentieth century.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
