Wide-ranging and thoroughly researched, this work advocates that instructional librarians should rethink their traditional supporting roles and begin to collaborate as full partners with faculty and instructional designers in online course design. Digital humanities projects and MOOCs (massive open online courses) are examined as fruitful bases for librarian cooperation with other faculty in higher education. Though not a "how-to" book, there are some case studies that provide helpful practical advice. Eschleman is an instructional librarian at Johnson & Wales University Library-Charlotte, where contributor Richard Moniz serves as director of library services. Karen Mann provides instructional technology and design services at Johnson & Wales, while Kristen Eshleman serves as director of instructional technology at Davidson College, NC. Consisting of nine chapters, each written by one or two of the four authors, contents include the changing environment of higher education; comparisons of the roles of librarians and instructional designers; best practices, collaborations, and cooperative ventures; the uses of digital media in the university, integrating the library into learning management systems; and future directions. VERDICT Recommended for reference and instructional librarians as well as instructional designers.--Margaret Sylvia, St. Mary's Univ. Lib., San Antonio
