Yasmin (global health storytelling, Stanford Univ.) details the life of Joseph "Joep" Lange (1954-2014), a Dutch doctor at the forefront of global HIV/AIDS research and advocacy from the disease's earliest days. His career encompassed trials in Europe and Africa, work with worldwide health organizations, and involvement in international AIDS conferences. Yasmin offers a vivid sense of Lange's complexity, his faults and virtues, and the people and the causes he loved. While there have been many books written about AIDS from a global perspective, this biography manages to keep that history within another story, one of a man passionate about fighting and preventing the disease. Yasmin explores Lange's determination and tireless work, his willingness to speak truth to power to various parties involved in the decision-making processes over AIDS trials, treatment, and testing. VERDICT Readers interested in the history of HIV and AIDS or biographies of persons who played a significant role in global health will find this a fascinating read.--Aaron Klink, Duke Univ., Durham, NC
