Gr 6-8-Discrimination. Genocide. Dignity. Humanity. These titles unite a diverse group of individuals unafraid to take a stand for equality, some with remarkable similarities in their struggles despite the differences in their journeys. From nonviolent protests where leaders walked in dissent to voicing one's beliefs through the written word, our modern worldview has been shaped by their actions. More than just life narratives, this series provides a reflection of history. Maps, schematics, historical sketches, and paintings convey their unique stories. With the exception of Tecumseh, for whom no photographic evidence exists, vintage and modern photographs combine with effective, concise writing that often addresses some heavy themes. The appealing layout contains supplemental information found in text boxes. New vocabulary is defined both on the page it occurs and in the appended glossary. Critical thinking questions are included in the back matter as well. VERDICT Great for middle grade collections and to prompt discourse while teaching civil rights units.
