Dave the Potter

Dave Drake, artist/poet/slave, was born in 1801. The place of his birth is uncertain, but he created his visual masterpieces in South Carolina. Eventually, he added poetry to his creations, using simple words to introduce himself and his witty observations about people, life, and the weather. Narrator Kevin Free describes Dave's life humbly, especially as the author details how dirt and creek water turned into his massive pots. Free also recites the simple poetry with profound feeling and sensitivity. The author's note reveals that after learning about Dave at a conference, Hill decided he had to recognize the artist, who created more than 40,000 pots over seven decades.
