This service guide for seniors and their caregivers gives lifesaving tips on everything from animal bites to dislocated shoulders to CPR. Advice often appears after boldface questions, such as Should I use antiseptic ointment? (The answer: beware of allergic reactions to the antibiotic neomycin.) The author's less-than-eloquent writing style may turn off some readers: Kidney stones cause extra bad pain that comes in waves and gets much worse when you try to pee. But, for the most part, Brouhard gives commonsense advice, spelled out in 29 chapters (each with multiple entries). For example, a chapter on twisters, earthquakes, and other bad days includes a burning down the house entry that reminds people to get out in a hurry and not stop to grab anything. The tips are not comprehensive. A short entry on strokes fails to mention that doctors typically recommend giving patients the drug TPA within three hours. But the book provides a basic overview essential for any collection of senior Rx titles.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
