These three books attempt to simplify a world of (sometimes conflicting) nutrition advice for new mothers and babies. Verdict Health writer and dietitian Ward offers an information-packed look at eating right during pregnancy and "the fourth trimester" based on MyPyramid. Moms-to-be looking for the latest research findings in a handy reference will find this book useful, if a bit dry. In contrast, controversial food writer Planck's lively follow-up to Real Food argues that "traditional foods" (read: red meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables) are best; many of her views on extended breastfeeding or drinking wine while pregnant/nursing are not mainstream, and she's unlikely to appeal to vegetarians or vegans, but she makes her case with zeal. Libraries where her first book is popular will find readers clamoring for this candid account of Planck's pregnancy and early motherhood. Moms worrying about making good food choices for their baby or toddler may want to head straight for Karmel's latest book. This updated version of the 1991 original contains kid- and family-friendly recipes, nutrition advice, and tips for feeding the littlest (and pickiest) eaters.-Mindy Rhiger, St. Paul, MN
