The underlying allure of magic, witchcraft, and the occult is their power over the inexplicable and uncontrollable. This pictorial chronology covers a range of topics: spirits, spells and curses, plants and elixirs, lore, cults, fetishes and talismans, and magic tricks and entertainment. Chapters are arranged chronologically, from ancient roots (prehistory to 400 CE) to modern times, tracing early practices in Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Hindu, Mayan, and many other cultures; the separation of mainstream religion from folk magic; the demonization of witches; popular fascination with the occult and spiritualism; and the impact of ceremonial magic and mass media. The volume concludes with a detailed glossary and index. As with other DK books, each two-page spread balances colorful images (mainly of primary sources and artifacts, all cited) with clear, explanatory text. This book provides a fascinating overview of the history of magic, with some emphasis on witchcraft and the occult, presented in an easily browsed, highly visual format. Though European practices comprise the majority of the text, there is a wealth of global information in this brief and attractive package.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
