There's no real battle in THE BATTLE FOR LAS VEGAS--it's more of a series of skirmishes that took place as law enforcement tried to keep the Mob in line in a city where everything was for sale. It was a battle that nobody won. Narrator Michael Taylor performs the book like a latter-day Walter Winchell, accentuating the punchy dialogue about the Mafia types who ran everything in Las Vegas from the 1970s to the mid-1980s. Because Dennis Griffin's story is true, it lacks the big finish that listeners have come to expect from decades of films and books about the Mob. Truth be told, they are mostly stupid and greedy and, often, pretty dull characters. THE GODFATHER it's not. M.S. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
