In the "creekers and hollers" of Eastern Kentucky, Linda Sue grew up with a big head of tangled curls, a lot of social awkwardness, and a web of family and kin that made wonderful stories and pretty good lives. She makes an irresistible companion as she charts how she became who she is, an improbable journey from Linda Sue to Lee to Linda, through college, graduate school, and a first marriage. Her great gift is to render in absolutely limpid fashion what growing up in Appalachia meant, without a trace of sentimentality. Although it is about the men eating first, about no indoor plumbing or telephones in the early years, and about a certain religious fundamentalism, it is also about a question like "Who're your people?" defining and expanding what the home place is; or Christmas as a central, passionate event. DeRosier's robust language and mordant humor never flag, and she allows us to see and to hear the Appalachian child in the fiftysomething psychology professor from Montana.
