Steck (1976-2017) was an internationally known mountaineer who garnered attention for summiting Mount Everest and solo climbs on mountains such as Annapurna. Owing to his mastery and speed of climbing, his unfortunate and untimely death while climbing in the Himalayas in April 2017 made headlines around the world. Steck's first book to be translated into English provides an inside look into the mind of a mountaineer tackling a few of his biggest challenges from 2012 to 2016. It starts by detailing his account of the infamous 2012 brawl on Everest that involved him, his fellow climbing partners, and a group of Sherpas; he describes how that experience affected him throughout the rest of his life. His next climbing adventures, which included Annapurna, Shishapangma, Eiger's North Face, and a summit of all 4,000 meter peaks (82 total) in the Alps, introduce us to his various climbing partners and training regimen as well as rescue missions. VERDICT Death in the mountains is a recurring theme throughout, but Steck's documented passion for climbing makes this memoir bittersweet. Readers of outdoors literature will enjoy.--David Miller, Farmville P.L., NC
