Grades 4-7 The admirable Girls in Science series offers compact introductions to STEM careers, with a focus on successful women in these fields, both historically and at work today. Each volume opens with an overview of the subject at hand, calling attention to important female firsts and contributions. The next three chapters highlight three contemporary women whose jobs represent a variety of career paths within a specific discipline. Emphasis is placed on their education and training, accomplishments, and any obstacles or gender discrimination they may have experienced. Aviation touches on the history of flight, noting remarkable aviatrixes and modern advances. Here readers will meet a female flight instructor, an aeronautical engineer, and a U.S. Air Force pilot. Primary source text boxes, which include QR codes to relevant online resources as well as critical-thinking questions and profiles of women pioneers or authorities in their fields, are liberally used. Though source material isn't always provided for quotes, the back matter is fairly extensive. Informative and encouraging guides, especially for science-minded girls.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
