Sheltering Books

Grades 3-5 Each book in the Community Connections: How Do They Help? series profiles one or two young people who wanted to help others, describes how their efforts evolved, and looks at the ongoing work of their charitable organizations. Each double-page spread includes paragraphs of large-print text and a colorful photo, while sidebars carry additional details, comments, and questions. The clarity and matter-of-fact tone of the writing add to the appeal of the kids' stories. Diagnosed with an incurable pain syndrome in 2003, 10-year-old Mackenzie began giving books to a nearby shelter for abused children. Sheltering Books features her nonprofit organization, which has collected and donated more than 360,000 books.
