Grades 1-3 This picture-book biography of Agnes Bojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa, describes how a childhood in Skopje, Macedonia, laid the groundwork for her lifetime of charitable service to the poor of India. The bare-bones biography describes how young Agnes was a girl who loved to help others. While still a child, she was moved by the words of a visiting priest who told stories about India. At 18, she left for Calcutta and taught before establishing the Missionaries of Charity. Presenting the young Mother Teresa as just a "little person with a big dream" problematically minimizes the enormity of a religious calling to the level of a childhood fantasy. But there is no denying the impact that Mother Teresa's service had on countless lives, and that comes through here. Though the childlike illustrations have an unfortunate sanitizing effect, they are in keeping with the style of the other books in the Little People, Big Dreams series. A time line and recommended reading list wrap up this simple book.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
