Gr 4-8-Focusing on the lives, beliefs, and accomplishments of two notable presidents, these volumes are not only accessible and absorbing, but also present accompanying activities designed to enhance children's understanding of these pivotal figures and their times. The books are clearly written, informative, and supported by numerous sidebars that round out the historical context in which these men lived. Primary quotes are interposed throughout, and illustrations, photographs, and visual aids are plentiful and well placed. Lincoln is depicted as an individual burdened by the great responsibilities of war and governance, who believed less in his right to abolish slavery than the imperative to maintain the Union. Washington is portrayed as a man of depth and emotion, one who would throw down his hat in frustration with his troops. While occasionally veering toward the superfluous, the activities provide a wealth of ideas for teachers, parents, and others interested in bringing history to life for young people. Projects in "Lincoln" include surveying, holding a debate (à la Lincoln and Stephen Douglas), drawing a political cartoon, and learning Morse code. Those in "Washington" include creating "A Book of Good Manners" (intended to mirror one compiled by the 14-year-old Washington), dancing the minuet, writing with a quill, and building a weathervane. Two excellent resources."Teri Markson, Los Angeles Public Library"
