In this treasure trove of knowledge gleaned from a lifetime of knitting, Radcliffe (The Circular Knitting Workshop, The Knitting Answer Book, The Essential Guide to Color Knitting Techniques) has dispensed with the usual “how-to” reference book and written a “why-to” guide instead. Brimming with sage advice, intriguing tips and tricks, and thoughtful considerations of every aspect of knitting, this book is a must-have for knitters of all levels who want to understand how to alter, control, and personalize their work. The book is divided into chapters that follow the lifespan of a project, from “First Choices: Pattern, Yarn, and Needles” to “Putting It All Together,” to chapter on “Borders, Bindings, and Embellishments.” Each chapter covers both conceptual topics(“Going Beyond Conventional Construction”) and practical ones (“Fixing Mistakes” or “Size and Fit Adjustments”), as well as tidbits on techniques and embellishments (“Adding Short-Row Bust Darts” or “Afterthought Invisible Pockets”) The book is chock-full of useful photographs and diagrams, and its clarity, detail, scope, and companionable tone make it an extraordinary reference and a delicious read. Radcliffe (Circular Knitting Workshop) has made a name for herself as the author of several thorough, detailed knitting references. Her latest focuses on knitting from prewritten patterns, taking knitters step-by-step through the process of matching the right yarn with the right pattern, planning the project, knitting, and finishing. Radcliffe's approach is not an "accept what's on the page" method, rather, she uses the pattern as a jumping-off point for customizations, clearly explaining the reasons behind design choices and offering suggestions for adaptations both common (converting flat knitting to circular knitting) and unusual (custom shaping for a more flattering fit). The chapter on correcting problems (such as dropped stitches and extra stitches) is useful, providing an accessible way to dealing with some of the most frustrating mistakes, and the section on finishing provides clear instructions for an assortment of professional-level finishes. Color photos throughout the book both illustrate concepts and provide step-by-step instruction. VERDICT Beginning and intermediate knitters will likely benefit the most from this book, but even knitters with extensive experience will find useful advice, new approaches to common knitting issues, and ways to modify and customize patterns.
