Focusing on techniques rather than projects, Crowfoot, who has worked for Rowan Yarns and Debbie Bliss, here progresses from the basics for beginners to more complex, advanced styles and techniques such as Tunisian crochet, intarsia, and entrelac. The techniques are illustrated with full-color, close-up illustrations, and these allow crocheters to see how the stitches are constructed. In a book like this, organization is key, and each clearly labeled section has its own colored tab on the side of the book for easy access to needed information. Every crocheter should have a reference to the craft, and this is a solid choice.

The words bible and reference are not synonymous with boring. Crowfoot proves that as she promotes the art of crochet on every page of her excellent guide, beginning with an overview of the crafts origins and its requirements and necessities (for instance, hooks, needles, and knowledge of how to read a chart). Each chapter truly exposes the how-to details, not only in words but also, most important, in oversize illustrations. Included are a well-explained section of basics (for instance, how to differentiate between front and reverse sides and how to work crochet for left-handed crafters) and specific stitch categories: texture and lace, thread, Tunisian entrelac, color, beads and sequins, edgings, and professional finishing techniques. Shaded sidebars answer typical novice questions, from ideas for storing hooks to how to keep rounds flat. A comprehensive book that belongs on every crafts shelf.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2010, American Library Association.)
