This short book examines the events leading up to the Battle of Antietam, as well as the battle's consequences for the North and the South, and the emancipation of the slaves. McPherson argues that Antietam was both a Union victory and a defeat because of the failure to pursue a crippled and retreating foe. Nonetheless, he identifies Antietam as the turning point in the Civil War. Nelson Runger gives an eloquent, expressive reading.
