The ground covered by AMERICAN HEROES is well covered by popular history books, but Morgan's take on the men and women who shaped our nation in its early years is still worth a listen. He uses accounts of Americans like William Penn and Ben Franklin to show listeners what life was like in Puritan New England, at Yale, and in the fledgling democracy, to name just a few of his topics. Narrator David Chandler reads with an engaging professorial tone; his clear and informative presentation also has emotion and passion for his subject. Listeners will likely find themselves thinking about the principles and lifestyles illustrated by the stories a little more deeply than with similar histories. J.A.S.
