As a news reporter for over 40 years, Schieffer, chief CBS Washington correspondent and moderator of Face the Nation, offers an insider's perspective on American broadcast news since the 1960s. Covering such stories as Kennedy's assassination, forced integration at the University of Mississippi, Vietnam, and the attack on the World Trade Center while wisely resisting the overreported Watergate and Clinton-Lewinski scandals, Shieffer provides a personal yet balanced view of nearly every domestic news story during his career. Although not revealing much new on the political scene, the book offers informative, amusing personal anecdotes, especially about those in high office, Schieffer's years at CBS, and his attempts at balancing family and career, which he admits did not always go smoothly. Adding to this memoir's authenticity and pleasure is the author's familiar voice reading his own words. This behind-the-scenes chronicle of America since Kennedy is essential for all public libraries.-Nancy R. Ives, SUNY at Geneseo
