Author Colin Calloway recounts the "colonial collision that constitutes so much of American history." Focusing on the Shawnee tribe, he relates the sad story of anti-Indian racism on the part of the settlers pushing westward, which in almost every case, involved murder, theft, and finally containment. Narrator George Wilson sounds just like the avuncular Walter Cronkite but reads with a slower pace. His equanimity has a plus, however, in that one can hear and understand every word--especially the hundreds of Indian tribal names--in the story of our not too democratic past. Wilson has two treatments for quotes. One involves a healthy pause before them, and the other involves conjuring up a slight deviation in his voice. The language and subject would suit teens and young adults. J.A.H. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
