Coleman, who's edited and translated a Norwegian-English dictionary, and Veka (president, Norwegian Name Assn.) have compiled a highly detailed, alphabetically organized list of Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish names, with separate sections for girls and boys. Each listing includes possible alternate spellings, etymology, and a mythological or historical figure bearing the name. While the name directories will be handy for new parents seeking baby names, the chapters that follow make it a relaxed cultural studies guide and expand the book's audience. An exploration of Scandinavian-U.S. immigration and the culture's subsequent influence on popular culture becomes the book's secondary but no less engaging focus. Practical, educational, and entertaining.
