MacLeod's (Paris Letters) outsider view of Paris is a lovely portrayal of the romantic city, as she shares her experiences living there as an expat. This book is written in a font resembling handwriting, and the diary-like format recalls the author's days with reflections, quotes, photographs, drawings, and stamps. MacLeod has a deep love of Paris and its onetime residents, frequently telling stories about Renoir, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Anais Nin, Victor Hugo, and the like. She also includes stories of the different Napoleons (yes, there was more than one), examinations of café culture, historical sights, Paris's bike share system, and of course, pastries. She would never be mistaken for a Parisian but has a great eye for the city's beauty, capturing those precious moments that locals probably take for granted (and that an outsider never does). VERDICT Recommended for readers who love Paris. Those with a keen fascination of the city's rich literary and artistic history will also enjoy.--Cheryl Yanek, Brooklyn
