Journalists and coauthors Benedict and Keteyian (both, The System) have deconstructed the carefully crafted movie script that has been Tiger Woods's life. This was not an easy task given the nondisclosure agreements required of Woods's associates. While cataloging the golfer's successes, the authors also shed light on his formative years in California, including his trials and failures. Tiger was a child prodigy, but did he have a voice in choosing golf? The authors give a qualified yes. Were his parents controlling? Yes. But Woods was willing to excel in every way at his disposal. At the same time, his parents, agents, and partners did all in their power to keep their protégé in a position of power. This came at a personal price to Woods--conflicted emotions, a failed marriage, physical injury, emotional pain, and drug abuse. Benedict and Keteyian also show that Tiger is capable of redeeming himself. VERDICT An unvarnished portrait of one of the world's most successful golfers.--Steven Silkunas, Fernandina Beach, FL
