Changing colors is one of the foundation techniques of knitting. Ihnen revisits that technique, introducing tips that make the process of striping easier for both flat knitting and knitting in the round. Successive chapters introduce other, more difficult types of pattern knitting: stranding, slipstitch, mosaic, and intarsia. Each colorfully illustrated chapter includes technical information about the technique, pictures of various patterns that might serve as practice models, and three or four step-by-step projects to put new skills to the test. Charts (with tips on how to read them) appear in color, and required materials are located in boxes heading each project. Experienced knitters of a variety of ages will be attracted to these projects: a flap purse, a cap decorated with an owl design, wristlets, and a colorful child's cardigan. The final chapter considers ways to further embellish a project by using embroidery stitches, ribbon, cording, and other special knitting techniques. Like Burger's book Crochet 101 this has a covered spiral binding that will need to be reinforced, but the extra effort will be worth it where knitting books are especially popular.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
