Most people are aware that actor Bill Cosby was convicted of indecent assault in 2018; however, many may be surprised to learn that the victim in that case reported the assault to law enforcement back in 2005; almost 12 years before charges were filed against Cosby. Egan, who worked as a Philadelphia Daily News reporter at the time, followed the story from the beginning. While the mainstream media mostly ignored the allegations in 2005 and questioned the victim's integrity, Egan pushed to keep the story in the news, despite multiple threats from Cosby's attorneys. It wasn't until a comment from a fellow comedian in 2014 brought the allegations into the national spotlight and more than 60 women came forward with similar stories that prosecutors finally decided to press charges. Egan interviews several of Cosby's victims, tracing some allegations back to the 1970s, then examines the factors that allowed Cosby to continue these behaviors for so long, citing the media and entertainment industry, racial issues, and the societal tendency to doubt victims. VERDICT The shocking details of the calculated, predatory crimes committed by a formerly beloved American icon are sure to draw wide interest.--Melissa Stoeger, Deerfield P.L., IL
