If the quilts shown at the Modern Quilt Guild's 2015 QuiltCon are any indication, improvisational piecing is a major trend within the modern quilting movement. Quilter Wood brings together her inspirations, which include the well-known Gee's Bend quilts, modern dance, and jazz, in this guide to improvisation in quilting. Each of the projects in the book is presented as a "score" containing steps to take quilters from selection of fabrics to piecing to finishing in a thoughtful progression. Wood also includes a variety of mind-body exercises intended to engage mindfulness in the process of improvisation. The book closes with a step-by-step guide to techniques commonly used in improv piecing, such as piecing curves and ruler-free cutting and piecing. VERDICT Improv quilting may not be to everyone's taste--it can be visually jarring at times--but many who love this style are downright passionate about it, and Wood provides a comprehensive overview of improvisational techniques.
