Chocoholic? Can't eat just one potato chip? Physician and author Peeke (medicine, Univ. of Maryland, College Park; Body for Life for Women: A Woman's Plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) discusses the reality of food addiction, the effects of food on the release of dopamine in the brain, and the "false fixes" that form from repeated exposure to foods. Since food addicts can't simply stop eating forever, Peeke presents a plan to rewire the brain and break the "Hunger Fix Cycle"--the constant desire to eliminate a false hunger--and replace "false fixes" of food with "healthy fixes," such as active movement and meditation. Three stages are presented: detox, beginner recovery, and lifelong recovery. Inspirational real-life stories of those who have overcome their food addictions and battles with weight are included, as is an eating plan with meal ideas and recipes. VERDICT Peeke's accessible writing style will engage readers who may feel they have finally found a new way to approach weight loss.--Pauline Baughman, Multnomah Cty. Lib., Portland, OR
