Bowers chronicles the remarkable life and times of Genevieve de Gaulle, Charles de Gaulle's niece and an active participant in the French Resistance during WWII. Rising rapidly through the ranks of resistants, she was eventually captured by the Nazis and sent to the notorious Ravensbruck concentration camp. After surviving the unspeakable, she devoted the remainder of her life to fighting for social justice as well as for the rights of fellow former prisoners of war. Though there were many women in the Resistance who performed great acts of courage, their stories have remained untold or marginalized by historians, who preferred to concentrate on portraying men in high-profile leadership positions. Seeking to redress this appalling oversight, Bowers mines the life of an unflagging female patriot who remained dedicated to a multitude of human rights causes until her death in 2002. An important and accessible addition to the always popular WWII history collection.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
