As the creator of TV soaps All My Children, One Life To Live, and Loving, with a writing career spanning six decades, Agnes Nixon was known as "the queen of TV soaps." Nixon died on September 28, 2016, at the age of 93 after struggling with the aftereffects of a stroke, but not before penning this memoir that covers her early years, her parents' divorce, her father's crushing criticism of her writing dreams, her heartbreak at the death of her fiance in World War II, and her eventual success as the leading lady of daytime soap writers in a field dominated by men. What set Nixon apart from other writers was her desire to use her platform for good. She was the first to deal with interracial relationships and other controversial issues. "I had always felt the older serials centered on interpersonal conflicts: jealousy, hate, love, or avarice...but I wanted to do more with my scripts. I wanted to show the causes of the tragedy that beset humankind." VERDICT Fans of Nixon's TV programs will enjoy the behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Women writers and writers in general will be interested in how she thrived in a male-dominated world.--Rosellen Brewer, Sno-Isle Libs., Marysville, WA
