As evidenced by their titles, both of these books speak to those who might be disenchanted with the pharmaceutical remedies to conditions that seem to have no relief. Mackey, a certified lab analyst and environmental technician, suggests a fulfilling life supported by the discarding of limiting beliefs and living in accord with nature. Scher, an ordained minister of holistic healing, uses energy therapy techniques, such as tapping, belief-cleaning meditations, chakras, and stone-throwing to help those suffering from chronic illness and those in need of emotional recovery. Furthermore, Scher shows how to get messages from the subconscious mind, transform unhealthy emotional patterns, and keep moving ahead. Mackey promotes getting beyond the debilitating mind-sets of accepting defeat, seeing oneself as a victim, and fearing illness, and posits alternative ways of thinking in terms of new strategies and practices. She also provides meditations and herbal remedies along with her own experiences with stress, depression, and anxiety. VERDICT While both books have value, Mackey's relates an autobiographical journey through solutions, while Scher's poses an annotated list of recommended therapies.
