Writing in a meandering, conversational style, Visser delves into her decades of experience navigating the sometimes challenging world of sports journalism. From her early start as an athlete and sports fan in western Massachusetts to college and a career in Boston and beyond, the author details her thoughts and experiences as one of few women working in the male-dominated field. Amid numerous photos of the author with coaches, players, and commentators as well as anecdotes about such sports luminaries as Patriots general manager Bill Belichick and sportscaster John Madden, Visser vividly describes the excitement and energy that took her from the Super Bowl to the U.S. Open to the Kentucky Derby. Peppered throughout are references to the powerful women's movement of the 1970s and the shifts in culture that Visser navigated to become a success. A love of sports and sports journalism clearly serves as the wellspring for many anecdotes, but beyond that, it can be difficult to find a narrative thread connecting the stories and memories. VERDICT This memoir will appeal to those interested in a behind-the-scenes glimpse into some key moments in sports history and those who have followed Visser's career.--Rebecca Brody, Westfield State Univ., MA
