What is quantum physics, and how was it discovered? It is the science that explains the actions of atoms and subatomic bodies. Not having powerful and sophisticated research equipment (by our contemporary standards), early-twentieth century pioneers of quantum physics relied mostly on mathematics to develop theories of matter and energy. Their notions that most challenged unbelievers were that atoms are both particles and waves and that regular physics cannot explain this duality. Science journalist van Calmthout highlights over 100 years of microparticle experimentation and the recent developments of real quantum devices. So far, understanding of quantum behavior of atoms has led to the invention of transistors and microchips, which led to computers and cellphones. In the future, new platforms for secure communications and even teleporting (like in Star Trek) are possible. To lighten his book for nonphysicists, the author has inserted his story into an imaginary conversation with Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr. The ideas are still difficult, though, making this a best-fit for scientifically inclined readers.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
