This biography asks whether one can atone for past mistakes. Dr. Anne Spoerry's life and times are recounted in a deep baritone by writer-narrator John Heminway. At first, Heminway seems an incongruous choice as the narrator of a woman's biography since his voice is so deeply masculine. But as the chapters progress, the listener will come to appreciate Heminway's gentle treatment of this complicated story. He recounts the ups and downs of Spoerry's unpredictable life, starting when she was a medical student in France, moving to her secret years as a Nazi ally while herself a prisoner at a concentration camp, and ending with 35 years of service to the poorest of the poor in Kenya and surrounding areas. Heminway delivers his carefully constructed chapters with cliff-hanger detail that sends listeners immediately into the next section. M.R. AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine
