Mitter, an Oxford professor of modern Chinese history, draws on newly available material from Chinese archives to give readers a better understanding of China's role as a leading ally with the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union during World War II. Starting in 1937, with the first major confrontation between China and Japan, Mitter traces a history of brutal invasion and bitter resistance while highlighting three key individuals: Chiang Kai-shek, Mao Zedong, and Wang Jingwei.
