We Are Afghan Women

Not far on the heels of Malala Yousafzai's inspirational memoir, I Am Malala, comes a collection of stories from women in the Middle East, here Afghanistan, struggling to hold their own and produce change in their homeland. Intimate and well-rounded, these experiences, told in the words of Afghani women who are all contributing to a cultural revolution and who continue to face opposition on a daily basis, portray individuals of strength and vitality who are working to provide services that help empower and support their gender, including everything from job opportunities and education to simple things such as homegrown honey. This book opens cultural doors and supplies insights that connect one world to another, offering readers of political and social literature a new lens through which to view a place and culture different from their own. Each contributor has a distinct voice, adding to the book's authenticity and delivering a truly human glimpse into the lives of unknown people. VERDICT This well-curated and well-written compilation of inspiring and informative personal narratives will prove both enlightening and entertaining for many readers.
