Fogarty's (Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing, The Grammar Devotional) newest grammar guide continues her directions for the correct usage of specific words. From the choice to use African American or black to the contemporary graduated high school diction, the author examines words' traditional meanings and their changing usage. Other terms that we incorrectly think we understand are explained. For example, gantlet is the preferred word for describing "a path lined with attackers"--as in "to run the gantlet"--and a gauntlet is a glove. Consult Fogarty's title for directions on the use of in to versus into and than I versus than me. VERDICT A useful and fascinating compendium for writers, speakers, and grammar aficionados.--Marilyn Lary, San Bernardino, CA
