This creative biographical work emphasizes the private details of the most recognized and beloved of popes. Pigozzi, an international reporter for "Paris Match" magazine, had over 150 opportunities to encounter Pope John Paul II. These opportunities began at his historic election in 1979 and ended some 25 years later at his death in Rome. Pigozzi was granted unprecedented access to John Paul and enjoyed his confidence. Her firsthand experiences and behind-the-scene access, both at large stadium audiences and at intimate luncheons in the papal apartment, make her narrative personal and sincere. Through 12 beautifully written chapters, free of exaggerated emotion, the reader gains a new appreciation of the depth of character as well as the sanctity of this modern pope. Chapters describe the man Karol Wojtyla, his daily schedule, secret details of his frequent travels, vacation activities, his great sorrows, and the final hours of his life. Candid, informative, and enlightening, this book is recommended for public libraries seeking to expand their holdings in papal biography.John-Leonard Berg, Univ. of Wisconsin Lib., Platteville
