Harry Truman was an artillery officer in World War I, and his military record receives close scrutiny here. His career in uniform began not with the Great War, however; Truman was a volunteer in the Missouri National Guard because one of his youthful ambitions was to have an army career. (Another was to become a concert pianist.) Giangreco adopts a comprehensive approach to documenting Trumans ascent from the ranks to the officer corps, reconciling extant records, including unit histories, Trumans recollections, and his letters to Bess. Whether trivial or consequential, all related to Trumans period in uniform is seemingly present. Although Trumans management of a regimental canteen may seem minor, Giangreco lets that initiate a theme of competence coming to the notice of upper echelons. The author credits Trumans head for mathematics and his natural way of handling soldiers for his generally successful leadership of a battery consisting of 200 men. Going into combat in the Meuse-Argonne offensive of 1918, Captain Trumans actions as recounted by Giangreco will engage readers drawn to the formative experiences of future presidents.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
