Bradshaw presents guidelines and techniques of grammar without relying on explanations of numerous linguistic terms. Instead, his discussion builds upon readers' general experience and then teaches via examples. This second edition offers a new appendix consisting of ten "short reminders" about common grammatical issues, such as whether or not it is acceptable to end a sentence with a preposition (it is). What remains constant in this edition are the concise writing and straightforward approach that benefit general readers, not just students or professional writers. Bradshaw focuses only on clarifying particular points of grammar, and each "big error"--misusing "I" and "me," "that" and "which," and commas and semicolons, for example--is covered in its own chapter. A "bonus section" preceding the appendix addresses less common language questions, such as the correct use of certain pronouns. Unfortunately, there is no index, and the book lacks bibliographic references. For example, Bradshaw's sensible distinction between "less" and "fewer" in chapter eight is not supported with a reference to another source. Instead, he coaches readers to develop an accurate "inner ear" for grammar. Despite his strong sense of correct versus incorrect usage, Bradshaw still documents changing language conventions, such as the use of "good" and "well." Like his readers, Bradshaw may wonder if some day one of his "big ten" will no longer be considered an error. VERDICT While owners of the first edition can skip this update, the book stands as an especially effective, brief grammar resource for general readers and communicators of all kinds.--Marianne Orme, Des Plaines P.L., IL
